Allen Pollack

In Memorium

Allen Pollack, ardent Zionist and esteemed American Jewish figure, passed away on April 18, 2015. He was 76. Allen was a forceful, inspiring leader beginning with his role in the Habonim Labor Zionist youth movement. He attended Columbia Univ. and the U. of Stockholm, and subsequently taught at the Univ. of Pittsburgh where his students twice voted him Teacher of the Year. In 1967, he was instrumental in the founding of American Professors for Peace in the Middle East which grew into an international organization in the ‘70s and ‘80s. A brilliant, analytical mind, his books include co-editing “The Syrian Arab Republic” and ”The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan & the West Bank.” With steadfast commitment to the Jewish people and Israel, he served as a perceptive member of the Executive of the World Zionist Organization, American Section, as Chairman of the UJA Young Leadership Cabinet, and Chairman of the UJA Leadership Development Program in Israel. “His Judaism,” Rabbi Irving Greenberg said of him, “was about morality”. Allen lived in Jerusalem for many years. He will be especially remembered by his devoted nephews and niece, Vance, Adam and Janine and by his loving friends in Israel and abroad.
