ארזים הולכים ונגדעים גם אבינועם הארז נגדע, עברתי איתו את הקרב ההירואי בצפת ותמיד היתה לי פינה בליבי עליו יהי זכרו ברוך

    Dear Tamar, Hadass and Ptal,
Michael and I were very sad to hear that Avinoam passed away. We knew he had been sick for a long time, but it is always so sad when such a wonderful person leaves us.
I remember Avinoam’s beautiful smile since I was a little girl. He used to learn about AMX tanks from the French army and came to my parents’ home in Montmorency near Paris when he had some free time. Our family was always very happy to see him.
Avinoam grew up in a very simple environment and never learned the subtleties of French politeness as it was applied in the 1950s. There were many other things to be learned at that time (and now also!). Once my father took him and us to an Alsacian restaurant in Paris, and since he was very thirsty, he took the jug from the table and poured the cold water straight into his mouth. All the people looked at him! He was not embarrassed, nor were our parents! To show you how the cultures were different at this time, I must have been 5 or 6 years old and I was given blond beer (with alcohol) to drink and nobody was surprised – apart from Avinoam!
I saw him and Hanele also when I came for visits before my Aliyah. And of course, I will never forget that your family took me with them on the trip they made after the six day war. It was so interesting and fascinating, so many things to learn and so many people who knew so much – in particular the sights and explanations Avinoam gave us about Jenine. Hanele and Avinoam also invited me to their new home in Ashkelon and we also used to meet at many other family gatherings.
You, and all his family were a source of huge joy to him. I remember when he introduced us to his baby grand son Yariv, proudly making him stand on the palm of his hand.
It was always a joy to meet him, he was so bright and had a sparkling spirit. During recent years I thought often about him, but I am sad that our health problems prevented us from visiting him. We will always remember him with love and affection
Unfortunately, I am not sure we will be able to visit you for the shiva because of a succession of medical appointments that I have this week.
All our love and condolences to you and all your family.
    Dory and Michael Cwikel
