It’s a very sad day for me.
Alexander Zvielli has been doing what no one else in the JP and other Israeli media did. We Jews know how important it is to “remember and not forget.” His column “From Our Archives” disproved the popular saying "a newspaper lives for only one day." As a journalist (Russian) who has been reading the column for many years and translating excerpts from it for my numerous Russian (most “only Russian”) readers I can they with great sadness that Alexander Zvielli will be greatly missed.
I met him only once several years ago at the JP Archives and talked to him a few times by phone…
Could The Jerusalem Post find someone to continue his great work? I can only hope they will try.
Rest in peace, dear Alexander Zvielli!
One example of mat’l from his column that is most topical today (I have been disseminating it with the title “JONATHAN POLLARD, THEN [AND NOW]”):

25 years ago. On Nov 25, 1985, The Jerusalem Post reported that Israeli leaders said that they were shocked by reports that a USnavalemployee, JonathanPollard, was charged with spying for Israel but they insisted that they knew nothing about it. Pollard, it was understood from the US charges, had reported to Israel on Arab armed power. Alexander Zvielli

25 years ago. "… the New York Times reported that Pollard's "main contact" was an official at the Israeli embassy in Washington responsible for "collecting sensitive scientific data for military and other use." The FBI said that Pollard admitted passing documents to Israel. [Pollard was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987 and is still in prison, despite widespread appeals for clemency.]
