Dear Roï’s family,
I just heard yesterday that Roï was gone, and please accept my deepest condolences. I am shaken and sad, I couldn’t tell him a last goodbye. Roï was really dear to me. I remember meeting him one day, ten years ago, at the Sorbonne, during a conference on Spinoza. I heard him speaking Hebrew, and so I wanted to talk to him. Then we became very close friends. I remember his little apartment in Paris, near Alexandre Dumas station, where we discussed his thesis, and where he welcomed me and cooked israeli’s soup. I sometimes helped him with his French, I have emails of our exchanges. He was quiet, sincere, tender, sweet, of course smart and subtle, I loved his very Israeli sense of humor. He was prevenant. He had a deep inner life. He was delicate. When he welcomed me in Israel, he made me discovered Tom Waits. We listened to his music during our rides. Maybe you remember me when I came to your house in Gan Sorek. I have images of your beautiful house, your garden, your family, it was pessah, and he told me you were hiding pitot in the fridge, and it made me laugh a lot. He showed me the place near the sea he liked to go and think. He showed me the orange trees, and it gave me a taste of the ideal Israeli life. I remember his discreet smile. Last time I saw him was three or four years ago maybe, in Berlin. We went to look after Dori, and played with him in the square. We could talk and walk during hours. His presence was calming, and soulful. Reading our emails, I found this picture of him, in Israel, and I will forever remember him this way, smiling, reserved, wise. Two weeks ago, I was thinking of him, and I wanted to listen to his own music again, from this secret artistic life he had, next to philosophy. I didn’t know nothing about the situation, but I am sure it was no coincidence that I wanted to listen to him. May he rest in peace. With love,
Avishag
